The World is More Beautiful than we Deserve...
And More Fragile than we are Willing to Admit

We are now living through the most dangerous period in Human history. But, we still do have the power to change its course. Just barely...and not for much longer

This website exists because of two questions I've struggled with for a long time.

"What will our Earth look like - and feel like - if humanity keeps going the way it has been? and "What would it actually take to make humanity come together, to halt its headlong rush toward collapse and possible extinction?"

These are terrible questions for anyone to have to ponder, but whether or not we ask them, the future will come anyway. And, we will have no choice but to deal with it. Not in abstractions and data points, but in human lives, in the living world, in the systems that sustain everything we love.

I have spent a lifetime as a biologist and naturalist learning how the world is supposed to work — the breathtaking intelligence of natural systems, the wisdom of peoples who lived within them sustainably for thousands of years, and the reckless speed with which industrial civilization is dismantling everything that took billions of years to build. Much of my writing has been non-fiction, natural science, horticulture and gardening, but my concern for the future of humanity, our Earth, and all life, has prompted me to write my first novel, one that attempts to answer those two questions that have plagued me for so long.

My book, PARADIGM, is about class struggle and the fight for ecosocialism — a battle between the wealthy and powerful few committed to maintaining the status quo, and the rest of humanity fighting for survival and a more just world. Indigenous wisdom and ecological knowledge play a central role in the narrative, as does the broader argument that humanity cannot save itself without fundamentally changing its relationship to the natural world. PARADIGM is my attempt to answer those difficult questions in real terms everyone can feel, not as a policy paper, not as a scientific report, but in terms we can all understand, as a story, because stories are how human beings have always understood what matters most.

This website is divided into 4 Sections. In Section 1 (The Novel) you will find more information about PARADIGM, and about the story it tells of our possible future. There, you will also find information on where to purchase the book and even have the opportunity to download a free copy. Section 2 (The Crisis) is about the polycrisis we face, the scientists who are speaking out about it, and resources for intervention. Section 3 (The Science) describes how the world is supposed to work, about Earth's natural cycles, and how the Earth mitigates against abrupt changes, allowing life forms to adapt. Finally, in Section 4 (The Art), is a collection of  my paintings celebrating Earth's awesome beauty.

I hope this website will make you think - about our predicament, how we got here, and what we can do about it. It is a work in progress. I hope you will read the book.

ABOUT RICHARD DEVINE

P1000995.JPG

I am an artist and writer dedicated to exploring the complexities of life through visual storytelling. My works reflect our deep connection to the natural world and humanity's impact on it. With a background in both art and environmental science, I combine my skills to create pieces that provoke thought and inspire change. My journey through art aims to spark conversations about our relationship with nature.

Much of my writing has been non-fiction, natural science, but my concern for the future of Humanity, Earth, and all life, has prompted me to write my first novel, one about the current polycrisis civilization has created - inequality, injustice, climate change, environmental degradation, geopolitical struggles, pandemics, wars and authoritarianism. My book PARADIGM, is about humanity's struggle to overcome the threat of extinction due to all these destructive issues and attempt to establish a more just system of world governance.
